Why Gratitude is Good

“A joyful heart is good medicine,but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22


There is a simple, easy way to change your perspective on things and have greater joy: Be thankful.


Research as shown that the simple act of gratitude will change your life. Just google “the importance of gratitude” and read all the benefits of gratitude. Gratitude improves physical and emotional health, increases understanding, and reduces anger. Having more balanced emotions because of gratefulness will improve the relationships in your life and help you sleep better. By being thankful, you will feel better about yourself and the world around you.


All the benefits of being thankful must be the reason God emphasized gratefulness and positive thinking. God told us in His Word, the Bible:


  • To come to Him with thankfulness and praise (Psalm 100:4), instead of grumbling and complaining.

  • To say our prayer requests with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6), instead of anxiety and fear.

  • To rejoice always (1 Thessalonians 5:16; Philippians 4:4).

  • To be thankful (Colossians 3:15).


About positive thinking, God said in His Word, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).



A simple way to develop a habit of gratefulness is to get a journal where you will only write what you are grateful for. And start writing. Start with the small stuff…a sunrise, cup of coffee, the car starting. As you write your list, you will discover more and more what you are grateful for, even in the tougher moments of life.


“Thank you for my children, they are a gift.”


Write at least a few things you are grateful for every day, even if they are repeats from the days before. As you get into the habit of being thankful, you will find yourself becoming happier with yourself and the world around you.


Be grateful. It’s important. It helps. It’s God’s will.


You have what it takes. God is with you. And we are here for you.
